This year’s workshops will be conducted by two experienced artists — Tomasz SZRAMA (Poland/Finland) and Lenka KLODOVÁ (Czech Republic).
Tomasz SZRAMA presents himself as a performance artist for whom the very moment of creation is essential. For the past 30 years he has been performing in institutional contexts and venues, as well as in unique places such as streets and markets, an aeroplane deck, a ferry boat, a Mexican desert or a yurt on the Mongolian steppe, often in conditions that are far from ideal.
Now he wants to share his experiences, which have reinforced his belief that performance art is a perfect art form, and that the best way to learn it is by actively experimenting live, in the face of the eternal potential for personal failure, as well as watching others do so.
In Szrama’s workshop participants have the chance to practice the implementation of the concept of performance/action art set in a specific context (time, space, given conditions and constraints), as well as looking at and discussing different possible approaches to this exciting discipline. Szrama aims to provide participants with a platform to explore the possibilities of creating in front of an audience, to learn the relevant tools and to find their own vocabulary, methods, strategies. Although the course will focus primarily on ‘HOW TO DO / HOW TO BE’ with an emphasis on working under pressure, quick decision-making and compromise, there can be a lot of fun in it too.
Lenka KLODOVÁ is an artist, researcher, professor, curator and head of the Body Design Studio at the Faculty of Fine Arts, Brno University of Technology. Her art is at the intersection of corporeality, feminism, sexuality, and politics. Lenka KLODOVÁ works in various fields: from sculpture to body art, from installations to theoretical research. She heads the Festival of Naked Forms, an experimental platform that explores nudity in performance as a gesture of presence and resistance. In her workshops, Lenka explores the body as an instrument of creativity, vulnerability and political expression.
Lenka KLODOVÁ: ‘Performance can act as a mirror, a hiding place, a repository in which we can deposit our egos, our problems, traumas, emotions, and in turn we can retrieve them in different ways. It is open to anyone who wants to explore performance art, primarily in terms of how doing performance can be helpful in the human situation.
During the workshop, we will explore the archive of the Festival of Naked Forms (FNAF), which will serve as a source of inspiration and analysis. We will then develop a series of collective experiments on the theme of performance and adaptation based on our discussions together. During the workshop, we will also work towards a final performative outcome, which may be a series of individual performances or a collaborative work.’
The School of Performance will take place from June 12 to 14 at the Lviv National Academy of Arts.
The maximum number of participants in a group is 10.
The workshops will culminate in a performance on June 14.
